چکیده

Abstract Introduction The steep population decline of the emblematic monarch butterfly is caused mainly by reduction food sources for caterpillars and adults, as well disturbance in its overwintering forests. Although feeding at sites Mexico has long been considered unimportant, observations show that butterflies feed inside outside their forests on sunny days. Nectaring close to hibernation colonies may be relevant conservation, reserves faster disturbed However, there are no systematic studies nectar Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, Michoacán, Mexico. Aims In this study, we identified quantified main plant species visited nectaring Reserve. Methods We collected observational data flora visits three sanctuaries, around formed between February March 2019–2020 season. Results Butterflies fed 29 from 10 families. Most had white, yellow or blue flowers, were somewhat synanthropic flowering season winter. most Salvia mexicana S. plurispicata , which also abundant. By individual plant, Prunus serotina Crataegus Buddleja sessiliflora Verbesina oncophora Roldana albonervia visited. Hibernation in an Antarctic Fish: On Ice for Winter

Active metabolic suppression in anticipation of winter conditions has been demonstrated in species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, but not fish. This is because the reduction in metabolic rate in fish is directly proportional to the decrease in water temperature and they appear to be incapable of further suppressing their metabolic rate independently of temperature. However, the Ant...

Bats Swarm Where They Hibernate: Compositional Similarity between Autumn Swarming and Winter Hibernation Assemblages at Five Underground Sites

During autumn in the temperate zone of both the new and old world, bats of many species assemble at underground sites in a behaviour known as swarming. Autumn swarming behaviour is thought to primarily serve as a promiscuous mating system, but may also be related to the localization and assessment of hibernacula. Bats subsequently make use of the same underground sites during winter hibernation...

Hatchling turtles survive freezing during winter hibernation.

Hatchlings of the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta marginata) are unique as the only reptile and highest vertebrate life form known to tolerate the natural freezing of extracellular body fluids during winter hibernation. Turtles survived frequent exposures to temperatures as low as -6 degrees C to -8 degrees C in their shallow terrestrial nests over the 1987-1988 winter. Hatchlings collected in ...

geothermally heated caves for winter hibernation

We report that two species of mouse-tailed bats (Rhinopoma microphyllum and R. cystops) hibernate for five months during winter in geothermally heated caves with stable high temperature (208C). While hibernating, these bats do not feed or drink, even on warm nights when other bat species are active. We used thermo-sensitive transmitters to measure the bats’ skin temperature in the natural hiber...
